The Surfside 22 Hotel, located next to the Wollongong Sporting Entertainment Precinct has been granted a rare Primary Service Authorisation for an on-premises (accommodation) liquor licence. This authorisation allows the sale of liquor to the general public in the outdoor courtyard area, with them needing to be a resident of the motel, or a guest of a resident.
Typically, Primary Service Authorisations for an on-premises (accommodation) licence, are only granted in regional areas where there is less risk of the venue 'morphing' into a bar.
The Surfside 22 Hotel was able to put forth compelling controls within its Alcohol Plan of Management to ensure that the sale of liquor could never become the primary purpose of the business, and that it always remained a bona fide accommodation premises.
This marks a rare success for this licence category, and opens up the prospect that other businesses may enjoy the flexibility of a Primary Service Authorisation - provided they adopt sufficient controls to stay within the primary purpose of their licence.
